The route

How a collection is arranged

Four stations, the same wherever you live. The postcode decides who comes; you decide whether and when.

  1. 01

    Your postcode

Give us the registration plus the postcode of the street, drive or yard where the car sits. That postcode picks the buyer.

  2. 02

    The buyer for that area

The licensed buyer responsible for that patch reads the details and replies with a figure for the car.

  3. 03

    A slot that suits you

Happy with the figure? Pick a day and a time window for the truck. Turn it down and that is the end of it, with nothing to pay.

  4. 04

    ATF and certificate

Payment arrives by bank transfer, the car heads to an Authorised Treatment Facility, and its destruction is logged with the DVLA.

Before collection day

A little preparation makes the handover quick

Handover tends to take minutes: a quick check, the car goes on the truck, a signature. Delays nearly always come from small things, like a spare key nobody can find or a personalised registration nobody moved.

Run through the list a day or two before. If something on it is a problem, say so when you accept the offer and the buyer will plan around it. Our booking guide covers the details.

Have this ready

  • Your V5C (if it has gone missing, say so up front)
  • All the keys, spares included
  • An empty glovebox, boot, door bins and spare-wheel well
  • A private plate already retained or transferred
  • Room nearby for a recovery truck to pull in
  • Account number and sort code for payment

Missing one of these? Say so early. It changes the plan, not the collection.

Cars we collect

However the car got here

Seven situations we see most. Open the one that matches yours.

  1. 01

    MOT failures

Repairs cost more than the car is worth to you.

  2. 02

    Insurance write-offs

Every category, bought back or not.

  3. 03

    Accident damage

Bent, burnt or flooded, collected as it stands.

  4. 04

    Mechanical failure

Engine, gearbox, clutch or electrics gone.

  5. 05

    Non-runners

Will not start, steer or roll? Still collected.

  6. 06

    Salvage cars

Worth more as parts than as a car.

  7. 07

    Old and unwanted cars

Sitting unused, unloved or simply surplus.

FAQs

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask before booking.

More on the full FAQs page.

How does my request reach a buyer?

Your registration and postcode go to the licensed buyer who covers that postcode. They make the offer and arrange the collection with you directly.

Is there a charge for collection?

No. The offer you are given already accounts for collecting the car, and nothing is added on the day.

How am I paid?

Into your bank account. Cash for scrap has been banned in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so expect a transfer, never notes.

Do I have to accept the offer?

No. An offer is just that. You can think about it, ask questions or say no, and nothing is owed.

Which documents matter?

The V5C is the main one. Lost it? Mention that when you send the request; scrapping usually still goes ahead, and the DVLA is then told by letter.

What happens to the car?

It goes to an Authorised Treatment Facility, where it is depolluted, useful parts are recovered and the rest is recycled. The DVLA is told it has been destroyed.

Find out what your car is worth

Two details, the reg and the postcode, put your car in front of the licensed buyer for your area. Their figure, your decision.
