Consett was a steel town until its works closed in 1980, and the site has since been redeveloped with housing, shops and green space. It sits on high ground about 900 feet above sea level, which gives it some of the hardest winters in County Durham.
DH8 covers the town and its neighbours: Blackhill and Shotley Bridge to the west above the Derwent valley, Leadgate to the east, and Delves Lane and Castleside to the south.
Collection is routine in normal weather. In winter, gritted main roads such as the A692 and A68 stay open long after side streets become difficult, so flexibility helps.
Most homes in Consett have a drive or a road outside where the truck can stop. Shotley Bridge and the villages down towards the Derwent get the same service.
