Scrap car collection: questions and answers

How a request is routed, how you are paid, what paperwork you need and what happens to the car.

FAQs

The arrangement

How does my request reach a buyer?

Your registration and postcode go to the licensed buyer who covers that postcode. They make the offer and arrange the collection with you directly.

Which areas are covered?

Requests are accepted from anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales and passed to the buyer for that postcode. Our coverage pages describe the areas we know best.

Do I have to accept the offer?

No. An offer is just that. You can think about it, ask questions or say no, and nothing is owed.

Is there a charge for collection?

No. The offer you are given already accounts for collecting the car, and nothing is added on the day.

FAQs

Payment and paperwork

How am I paid?

Into your bank account. Cash for scrap has been banned in England and Wales since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so expect a transfer, never notes.

Which documents matter?

The V5C is the main one. Lost it? Mention that when you send the request; scrapping usually still goes ahead, and the DVLA is then told by letter.

Will I get my road tax back?

Yes, for any full months left. The DVLA refunds it automatically once it knows the car has been scrapped, and any Direct Debit is cancelled.

What if the car is on finance?

Clear the agreement first. On hire purchase or PCP the lender owns the car until the last payment, so request a settlement figure from them before booking.

FAQs

After collection

What happens to the car?

It goes to an Authorised Treatment Facility, where it is depolluted, useful parts are recovered and the rest is recycled. The DVLA is told it has been destroyed.

Can someone else hand the car over for me?

Possibly, if the buyer agrees in advance. Whoever hands it over may be asked for identification and proof that they can act for you.

Ready when you are

A quote request commits you to nothing. Send it and judge the offer when it arrives.
