Scrap car collection in London

From an E14 underground car park to a resident’s bay in SW16, a London collection starts with the postcode. It tells us which licensed buyer covers the street, and it tells them how to reach it.

London is divided into a patchwork of postcode districts, and so is the work of collecting cars from it. A request from E17 and one from SE9 go to whichever licensed buyer covers those districts, not to a single yard on the far side of the city. That keeps travel sensible and means the person who makes the offer knows the streets.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered every London borough since August 2023, which is why so many older cars are being retired here. A car that does not meet the standard costs a daily charge each time it is driven in the zone. Loaded onto a truck, it is not being driven, so its last journey costs you nothing in charges.

What a London collection usually involves

Most London cars are collected from the kerb. The question is always where the truck can legally stop: on a red route or a busy high street that can be the hardest part of the job, while a quiet residential road or an estate service road is easy. Mention anything that affects access when you accept the offer.

Underground and multi-storey car parks are possible, but headroom is often too low for a truck, so the car may need to be brought to the entrance. If the car is in a block’s car park, check with the managing agent first.

Parking permits and the paperwork that follows

If the car has a residents’ permit, tell the borough once it has gone: many boroughs refund or transfer the unused part. The DVLA side is the same as anywhere else in the country, and any full months of road tax come back automatically once the DVLA knows the car has been scrapped.

Good to know
Red routes and bus lanes limit where a truck can stop. A side road or a forecourt nearby makes loading quicker and safer.

FAQs

London: questions

What people in London ask before booking.

More on the full FAQs page.

Do I pay the ULEZ charge on the day it is collected?

No. The car is carried on the truck rather than driven, so it is not being used in the zone.

My car is on a red route. Can it still be collected?

Usually, with planning. Tell the buyer where it is; they may suggest moving it a short distance first, or a quieter time of day.
