Most of Portsmouth sits on Portsea Island, joined to the mainland by the M275, the A3 and the A2030 Eastern Road. On the island, rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces fill Fratton, Southsea, North End and Copnor, and on-street parking is tight almost everywhere. On the mainland, Cosham, Drayton and Paulsgrove have more space.
Portsmouth has a Clean Air Zone, but it is a class B zone that charges some commercial vehicles, buses and taxis, not private cars. Older cars here are retired for the usual reasons: repairs, MOT failures and age.
Because so many streets are terraced, nearly every island collection is kerbside. The driver needs a safe spot to stop beside the car, which on narrow streets with cars parked both sides can be the trickiest part. Telling the buyer about your street before the day really helps.
Southsea’s seafront and the streets behind it get very busy in summer and during events on the Common. A weekday or early slot makes the job easier.
North of the creek, housing is more spread out, with drives and wider roads, and quick access from the A27 and M27.
