Northampton grew around shoemaking, and its terraced streets still radiate from the town centre. The 1960s and 70s brought new town expansion to the east and south, with large estates around Weston Favell, Wootton and Hunsbury. Since 2021 it has been run by West Northamptonshire Council.
The postcode districts split the town neatly: NN1 the centre and Abington, NN2 Kingsthorpe and the north, NN3 the eastern districts and Moulton, NN4 the south and Wootton, NN5 Duston and the west.
St James, Semilong, Kingsley and Abington have long rows of terraced houses with on-street parking. Collection is from the kerb; the driver wants a gap next to the car, so the middle of a weekday is often easiest.
Weston Favell, Lings, Thorplands, Wootton and Hunsbury were planned with garages, drives and parking courts. In a parking court, check that the truck can get in and turn round.
Duston and the western side of town are close to junction 16 of the M1 and the A428. Most homes have off-street parking and collection is straightforward.
