Birmingham City Council serves more people than any other local authority in Britain, and its area stretches from Sutton Coldfield in the north to Longbridge in the south. The M6 runs past its northern edge, with Spaghetti Junction at Gravelly Hill, and the A38 crosses the city from north to south through the city centre tunnels.

Since June 2021, the Clean Air Zone inside the A4540 Middleway ring road has charged cars that do not meet its emission standards (broadly, petrol cars older than Euro 4 and diesel cars older than Euro 6). Check the specific car with the government’s vehicle checker. For many owners of older diesels who live or work inside the ring road, it has tipped the balance towards scrapping.

Inside the ring road

City-centre apartments often have underground or gated parking with limited headroom. If the car is in one, the truck may need to collect from the entrance, so describe the access and check any building rules first.

Terraces in the inner suburbs

Small Heath, Sparkbrook, Sparkhill, Handsworth, Aston and Lozells have long terraced streets with cars parked on both sides. Collection is from the kerb; a quieter part of the day helps.

The outer suburbs

Erdington, Kingstanding, Northfield, Kings Norton, Hall Green and Acocks Green have more semi-detached housing with drives. Collection there is usually quick, with easy access from the outer ring and the motorways.

Good to know
The Clean Air Zone covers the roads inside the A4540 Middleway, not the Middleway itself. A car carried on a truck is not being driven in the zone.
