6-minute guide
Scrapping a car properly comes down to two things: the car must end up at an Authorised Treatment Facility, and the DVLA must be told. Everything else is detail. Here is the process from start to finish.
Take out your belongings, and transfer any private number plate first.
The car goes to an ATF, either delivered by you or collected by a licensed buyer.
Give the logbook to whoever takes the car, keeping the yellow slip about selling to the motor trade.
Payment is by bank transfer or another traceable method.
Tell the DVLA the car has gone to an ATF. You can do it online using the reference number on your V5C.
Keep any receipt or Certificate of Destruction details until the DVLA confirms the change.
An ATF is a site licensed by the Environment Agency (or its equivalent in Scotland and Wales) to depollute and dismantle end-of-life vehicles. It removes fuel, oil, coolant, the battery and other hazardous parts, recovers reusable parts and sends the rest for recycling. Taking a car anywhere else to be scrapped is not legal.
The V5C is the car’s registration certificate. When the car is scrapped, the rest of the V5C goes with the car, and you keep the yellow section headed for selling or transferring to the motor trade. The DVLA must be told that the car has gone to an ATF. If it is not told, you remain the registered keeper and can be fined up to £1,000.
Vehicle tax cannot be transferred to another owner. Once the DVLA knows the car has been scrapped, it refunds any full calendar months left and cancels any Direct Debit. There is nothing to apply for.
Cancel the insurance only after the car has gone. Your insurer may refund part of the premium; that depends on the policy.

Scrapping at an ATF is usually free, and many buyers pay for the car. An ATF can charge if essential parts, such as the engine, gearbox or wheels, have been removed.
The handover itself is quick. Arranging the slot depends on the buyer's schedule and your availability.
